Finding the Right Home Care Provider
As an In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) consumer, you are free to hire anyone who can meet your needs. Here are some common ways to find a homecare provider:
- Word of Mouth – Tell everyone you know that you are looking for a homecare provider. You CAN hire a relative, friend, or neighbor.
- The Registry – Ask your social worker to refer you to the Registry that will attempt to match a provider to your needs and preferences. (All Registry providers go through fingerprinting and background check processes before referral.)
If neither of those work for you and you are comfortable recruiting on your own, here are some other options:
- Flyers – Put up flyers or cards on local bulletin boards (in your local market, senior center, library, church lobby or laundromat).
- Local Colleges – Call and ask the campus career centers that help students find work to list your job opening.
- Local Papers – Place an ad in the local newspaper. There is usually a charge for this service (ask if they give a discount).
- Employment Development Department (EDD)– Place an ad at the local EDD office.
